Since 1996,
a developer has been trying to obtain planning permission to build motorway
services in the beautiful countryside north of our village. In 2008 they embarked on their third attempt with a new planning application. To see the new planning application, click here and enter the reference number 08/05860/OUTMAJ. To read Kirby Hill RAMS objections to the proposals, click here. To read the Planning Officer's report recommending refusal of the application, click here. The proposed motorway service area (MSA)
would be larger than the village and just 500m from it. Over 21 hectares (that’s 32 football
pitches!) of farmland would be destroyed.
Long-range views from the village towards the North York Moors and the
Yorkshire Dales would be dominated by the MSA.
The noise, air, traffic and light pollution from 24-hour motorway
services would ruin the character of our village and its surrounding landscape
forever.
Kirby Hill
& District Parish Council and Kirby Hill RAMS (Residents Against
Motorway Services) are committed to fighting the
proposed motorway service area. 730
local residents have signed-up to support the RAMS. Detailed evidence has been prepared for two Public Inquiries into
motorway services on the A1(M). Both Public Inquiries rejected the proposed Kirby Hill site and new motorway service were built just 12 miles away at Kirk Deighton, north of Wetherby. In 2008 the Developer submitted a third planning application that was once again rejected by Harrogate Borough Council. Now the Developer has appealed and a third Public Inquiry is likely to take place in May/June 2010. The
links below will give you more information about the proposed schemes, our campaign
and what you can do to help.
